Delivering Social Value Through Digital Transformation: PwC’s Strategic Approach for the NHS

Client Intro
PwC is one of the world’s leading professional services firms, delivering assurance, advisory, and tax services to clients across the public and private sectors. In the UK, PwC works closely with government bodies and NHS organisations to support digital transformation, improve service delivery, and drive positive societal outcomes through technology and innovation.

Aim
PwC was preparing a bid for a strategic opportunity to support the NHS. To stand out in a competitive field, PwC needed to present a compelling social value response that demonstrated how its expertise could be used to support the NHS’s ambitions while delivering tangible benefits to local communities. The challenge lay in translating PwC’s Corporate Sustainability strategy into a locally resonant framework – one that aligned with the priorities of individual communities, the Government’s Social Value Model (PPN 002), and, critically, the NHS’s newly developed Social Value Model and Playbook, which outlines targeted strategies for addressing and reducing health inequalities.

Solution: Transformacy’s Expertise in Social Value Proposal Writing
PwC partnered with transformacy to develop a tailored social value strategy for the NHS bid. The solution focused on how PwC’s strengths – as a top employer and digital innovator – could be leveraged to create meaningful opportunities for local residents and reduce health inequalities. transformacy helped PwC shape a response that highlighted its inclusive recruitment practices, high-quality training pathways, and commitment to local employment. The strategy also demonstrated how PwC’s capabilities in digital applications, data analytics, and user experience could be used to support disadvantaged communities in accessing and benefiting from NHS services. The response was structured with a clear focus on health equity, digital inclusion, and community wellbeing.

Implementation

Transformacy worked closely with PwC’s bid and public sector teams to translate strategic intent into practical, locally relevant commitments. Key implementation elements included:

  • Local Employment and Skills Development: Committing to create apprenticeships and digital roles for local residents, with a focus on underrepresented groups and those furthest from the labour market.

  • Inclusive Employment Practices: Embedding PwC’s excellent employment standards into the delivery model, including flexible working arrangement, inclusive recruitment practices, and support structures designed to attract and retain diverse talent from the targeted local communities.

  • Digital Literacy and Inclusion: Proposing targeted outreach programmes to help locally digitally excluded individuals access NHS services confidently and effectively.

Each initiative was backed by measurable KPIs, delivery partners, and a clear roadmap to ensure credibility and impact.

Results
PwC’s social value response demonstrated how a global firm could bring its expertise to bear in a way that was meaningful for local communities – supporting digital inclusion, improving health outcomes, and creating economic opportunity. The strategy positioned PwC not just as a technology partner, but as a socially responsible contributor to the NHS’s digital future. Internally, the process also helped PwC refine its approach to localised social value delivery and strengthen its relationships with community stakeholders.
